It seems that Amazon will see what is a good selling item. Then all of a sudden Amazon starts selling that item below what we can get it for basically forcing us out of that market. This has impacted our sales dramatically and does not seem like a fair practice. We have built our business based on the volume created through Amazon and this has forced us to rethink how we operate. Unfortunately the amount of traffic through Amazon is nearly impossible to replace. Wish I had better options available as I have had to let some people go due to the lack of revenue.

I had been working with three eCommerce sites, seeing this happening right now, I decided to mention this to my clients and can you guess the responses I got from them, everyone wants to jump in and join Google Product Search.

I wish the requirements Google needed for joining in would be fair enough also for small and medium size companies so they will also have the chance of listing their products and services on Googles search engine instead of doing a lot of marketing works just to bring a customer to their shopping cart.

@ sally Rothwell ,I don t know where you get your facts from that Nigerians are the behind the scams being perpetrated on alibaba.com site .Let me tell you that am a nigerian living in the united states and i have been buying various items on ali express and alibaba for some time now without any problem ,infact there was an incident this year when my wife ordered human hair from a supplier on the same site and she had to return it because it doesnt look the same as the item she ordered ,the supplier is chinese, zghonghi liu ,by name and while we open dispute ,the supplier will neither chat nor return our emails to her and she will not acknowledge the delivery of the returned goods, but we noticed that alibaba removed her store from their site and to cut the long story short alibaba refunded our money about 3 weeks ago after a period of about six months of mediation between us ,and that gives them a lot of credibility.
You have to understand that every country has her own bad eggs ,i dont know where you hail from but its certainly very wrong of you to label nigerians as scammers the way you did ,and as far as am concerned alibaba is a legit site but that is not to say that the suppliers there are Angels ,it is left to you the buyer to select the good supplier to do business with.and mind you,Alibaba will NEVER release money to the supplier until you ,the buyer is satisfied ,so what 's your stress?

I own an e-commerce store and I think the whole concept of an internet sales tax is ridiculous. Brick and mortar businesses say its needed to "even the playing field". In reality the playing field is already even, with the addition of a sales tax it tilts to the brick and mortar stores favor. The reason...shipping costs. The money that on line shoppers save in sales taxes, they end up spending on shipping. Now they have to pay both online sales tax and shipping cost. This is a clear advantage for brick and mortar stores. I'm glad most shoppers don't know about internet taxes or refuse to pay them, however I worry that at some point the Gov. may try to force e-commerce stores to collect it for them.

The money that on line shoppers save in sales taxes, they end up spending on shipping. Now they have to pay both online sales tax and shipping cost. This is a clear advantage for brick and mortar stores. I’m glad most shoppers don’t know about internet taxes or refuse to pay them, however I worry that at some point the Gov. may try to force e-commerce stores to collect it for them.

I agree there needs to be a Federal Internet Tax until all States have laws that require all internet sites to collect taxes as we do in business on the ground. I would also emphasize the collecting a tax begins to bring taxes back to our Country and our States and communites. It's not just about leveling the playing field for small business this is about a fair and open society. If I were to ship my packages/sales out of state then I would not be required to charge taxes on these goods. Let's face it if you give an inch many will take a yard or more! Let's support aFederal tax and then encourage all States to charge a sales tax, once this happens then a Federal tax can go away.

There is a simple solution: TaxCloud (http://taxcloud.net).

The statements by Ebay in the article confuse me. My company currently uses a PayPal checkout button that works with TaxCloud's service so my business (with less than $50k in annual sales) already calculates, collects and remits sales tax for any jurisdiction in any state. It is simpler in most cases for my business to calculate and remit sales tax than to deal with shipping.

If my business can manage to collect the legally due sales tax for my customers, why is it so hard for Ebay?

Technology available freely on the internet (like taxcloud) is more than capable of handling sales tax calculation and remittance. Sorry everyone, the "too burdensome" argument carried merit in 1967 and in 1992 (when SCOTUS last ruled on this matter), but in the era of modern computing where Ebay maintains a dominant position, multijurisdictional sales tax calculation and remittance is easily accomplished.

So what is the real reason Ebay chooses to evade supporting your schools, hospitals, infrastructure, libraries, parks and so much more?

I am an expat living in Shanghai. I use Yihaodian almost exclusively now because of convenience (they deliver to the door without a delivery charge), except perishable items. I have always wondered how Yihaodian makes money since items are comparable in price to the supermarket but they deliver next day free of charge (for orders over $15USD). Plus they have promotions like 10% off, daily specials, etc. Now I know, because of Walmart--Yihaodian is trying to grab market share and a high valuation based on revenue. It’s like the late 1990’s all over again, Amazon style.

From the retailer's perspective (we are on the software side) there is definitely an increased interest in selling through social channels. Many retailers are seeing success when they integrate their online stores with their Facebook page, even as a means to promote and spread deals/news - and since many people are interacting with those pages primarily to get deals in the first place, the ability to immediately purchase (with said deals/discounts) has lots of potential.

Well said, Bill. The issue on the whole is definitely a slippery slope and we believe that most shoppers are probably like you and won't change much if online sales taxes become standard. But until then, you can expect them to continue cashing in on the advantage online shopping provides, fair or not. Thanks for the feedback!

As a consumer and frequent Amazon customer, I'm only too happy to avoid sales tax. But as a student and a teacher of ethics, I'm conflicted. The business that doesn't charge sales tax has an unfair advantage -- an advantage Amazon is protecting via economic blackmail. There's something really wrong about that.

I shop primarily online for the convenience, price and selection. Adding 7 or 8 percent won't change my habits.
