Airlines are offering great deals on flights to Europe this summer and many people are taking advantage. If you’re one of those people planning on hitting up Europe this summer, the first thing you need to think about after confirming your itinerary might surprise you—your luggage.
Most airlines have recently implemented tougher baggage policies and security regulations, meaning your luggage might need an overhaul or upgrade. And depending on the destination and length of your trip, you might need to consider adding a new piece of luggage too. It is important to pack smart and safe for your adventures overseas to eliminate all possible types of hassle.
For those only traveling 7-9 days with more than one destination days, we suggest you bring one small carry on suitcase and a backpack . This can help save time and energy as well by not waiting at the carousel for your luggage to arrive. There is also less risk for items to be lost or stolen. These are great pieces of luggage to consider if you are on a budget.
If you are traveling to only one destination, you may believe it is easier to bring one large suitcase and to check it. However, most airlines have a 50 lb. limit on checked baggage so make sure to weigh your suitcase after packing to ensure criteria. Heavier luggage will cost more to put on the plane and some airlines may ask you to buy another suitcase altogether. Always pack an extra outfit and bring it with you on the plane in case something happens to your luggage.
Families may have a very difficult time packing and deciding what suitcases to bring as a group. More people mean more clothes and more bags. To pack more efficiently, lay out all the necessary clothing before packing into the suitcase. Have your children wear their heaviest clothing on the airplane to increase space in the suitcase. Toys and books should be in their carry-on bags. Check the weather frequently to make sure you have the proper type of clothing. No matter what, always bring a sweatshirt or light jacket.
Many students who plan on traveling for over three weeks should consider buying a backpack. It is easy to carry on your back and offer great compartments to store clothing and bath products. Clothing can always be washed in hotels and laundry mats so don’t over pack on jeans and t-shirts. Always have more than a week’s worth of underwear and socks in case you aren’t able to clean for long periods of time.
When traveling, call your hotel prior to see if they have any electronic appliances so that you may not need to bring any. Most hotels have bath products and it may be easier to buy at your destination to save room in your luggage. Always leave room when packing for gifts and souvenirs for when you return. Most importantly, have copies of all forms of identification and distinctly mark your luggage!
Have a great summer of travel in 2009!
